Sometimes the best stories begin with a phone call.
Sometimes the best stories begin with a phone call.

I received a call from Cynthia Horner, Editor-in-Chief of Urban Entertainment, letting me know that she wanted to connect me with legendary entertainment publicist Beverly J. Paige. Her client, award-winning Gospel recording artist and music industry veteran Angela “Missy” Billups, would be in Dallas, Texas, sharing her extensive industry knowledge during the 2026 International Music Summit on Friday, October 2, at the DoubleTree by Hilton, and Cynthia wanted us to attend and cover the experience.

It was an invitation that turned into much more than simply covering an event.

Television and radio personality Tameka J. joined me for the summit, and from the moment we arrived, the hospitality stood out. The staff at the entrance welcomed us warmly, and Angela herself came out to greet us and simply said, “Come on in.” That personal welcome set the tone for what became a memorable weekend of music, education, networking and genuine industry fellowship.

When Angela took part in the day's conversation, it quickly became clear that she wasn't there simply as an accomplished Gospel recording artist. She was there as someone who understands the business of music from multiple sides.

As CEO of E’mazin Radio Promotion Services, Angela has spent years helping independent and emerging artists understand what happens after the music is recorded. Her presentation was impactful because the conversation addressed areas that can often be confusing for artists trying to establish themselves professionally, particularly music distribution, radio promotion and charting.

These are conversations that artists need to hear. Creating great music is one part of the journey, but understanding how to properly distribute, promote and position that music is another. Angela was able to speak from real-world experience as someone who has successfully navigated the industry as both an artist and an executive.

The room itself reflected the depth of the weekend. Among the notable industry professionals and talent in attendance were Dr. Earl Bynum, Serial Entrepreneur/Actor & award winning Artist, Emcee N.I.C.E., Dennis Cole of the Stellar Awards, Dr. Carol Crawford, presenter of the International Music Summit, Fitzgerald Davis of the DFW Alliance of Gospel Music Professionals and Gospel Music Workshop of America. As well as Gospel industry artists TruthWon, Taushey Sias, Gene Murden, Charles Moorer, Tammy Smith and Angela “Missy” Billups, along with additional artists and music professionals.

Having established professionals and emerging talent together created an environment where conversations could go beyond simply making music. There were discussions about building careers, developing relationships, understanding the business and learning how to navigate an industry that continues to evolve.

For us, the International Music Summit became a two-day experience, although the complete summit ran for three days. We had the opportunity to attend Friday and return on Saturday, October 3, when the experience continued with workshops and additional opportunities to learn and connect.

Saturday also gave us an opportunity to enjoy another side of the summit. After taking in the workshops and conversations throughout the day, we enjoyed the concert and afterparty, bringing together the educational, networking and entertainment elements of the weekend.

What stood out most was the sense of access. Events like the International Music Summit create opportunities for artists to be in the same room with people who have spent years building careers in music and entertainment. Instead of only seeing the finished product, attendees were able to hear about the work, knowledge and strategy behind it.

Angela “Missy” Billups represented that perfectly.

Her journey demonstrates that longevity in entertainment isn't built solely on talent. It also requires faith, perseverance, relationships, knowledge of the business and a willingness to continue evolving.

And she certainly understands longevity.

Angela has spent years building a career that extends from recording and performing to radio promotion, artist development, ministry and music industry leadership. Yet even with her accomplishments, she continues to use her experience to help others understand the road ahead of them.

That commitment makes her latest single, “Dream Again,” especially meaningful.

The song was born from one of the most difficult periods of Angela's life following the loss of her mother. Grief left her feeling as though she had lost her voice, strength and even her desire to sing. Through her faith, however, she found the strength to begin again.

“Dream Again” became a personal declaration that loss and disappointment do not necessarily mean the end of a person's purpose. For Angela, it represents restoration and the courage to believe that God can breathe life back into dreams that once seemed lost.

Hearing about that message while attending an event filled with artists and entrepreneurs pursuing their own dreams made the song feel even more relevant.

Our weekend at the 2026 International Music Summit began because of a phone call and an introduction. It ended as a reminder of why relationships, mentorship and access remain so important in the entertainment industry.

We walked away with new information, new connections and an even greater appreciation for people like Angela “Missy” Billups who are willing to share what they have learned along the way.

After decades in the business, Angela is still singing, still serving, still learning, still teaching and still encouraging others.

And perhaps that is the most appropriate message of all.

No matter where you are in your journey, sometimes you simply have to give yourself permission to dream again.
